Gobble absolute gobble. It’s the turkey holiday so you know I had to pick two songs written by or about turkeys!! I did genuinely think about looking for a song to extend this bit but gave up after one (1) ridiculous google search. Anyways, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for. As always, you reading this is one of them. And also, these two songs existing? I’m thankful for that too!!
Waa Waa Woe Is Me - austin white.
A flat out goofy tune, so playful and intoxicating. “Barely morning and she’s throwing ass on the gram / lucky for me i’m a close friend” if you like this line you’re going to like this song. A delightfully modern lyric fitting perfectly against this retro sound. white’s vocals picking up just a touch of autotune, it works well, a touch of looseness against a rigid production. It almost gives it some humanity, which feels weird to say about using a computer to make your voice less human… but in the context of the song, it’s some heart that might not be there otherwise. As the first verse continues the drums kick in, the production feels rather basic, almost stock sounds, but come to life in a grandiose way. Getting the most out of all of it. We release to synth horns calling out to the kingdom, it feels so bright. Just bopping through the pain, austin has a very distinct mumbliness that really gets me. A vibe that fits the style of the song and its message. If vocals have ever felt “waa waa” these are the ones. Next time around, the horns come back with a bonus synth that leaves the kingdom and adds some underground club spice. I’m getting some Ex-Machina vibes and it fits just a little too well… The chorus is so fun and so approachable, I found myself singing along immediately. That ‘woe is me’ the perfect encapsulation of the struggles we’re lucky to have, in his own words, “It feels a bit trite to complain about my problems when the whole year has been a problem”. All in all it’s a bop and catchy as hell (hell, famously catchy), and I’ve been playing this one back over and over. It’s the first ~official~ release for austin white but sheesh the soundcloud is a gold mine.
Isn’t It Easy - Goldmyth.
A different strategy for a similar problem, Goldmyth “wanted to create a dreamy place where things felt easy for awhile” and let me think about it *thinking emoji* yep uh-huh they went ahead and nailed it. This is as breezy as it gets, wrapped with such warmth and sunshine. Instantly, every sound feels so tasteful. The intro is friendly as could be, as if each instrument is introducing themselves, hello drums, hello bass, hello everyone *picture me walking down the street Sesame Street-style* And the vocals… just pure angelic. The leads floating so high in the sky, with a supportive layer down on the ground with us, keeping it warm. The chorus hits, an added synth with fuzzy and full, Goldmyth just begging you to sway and spin in a big open field. To answer the titular question, yes this is easy!! The chorus perfectly balancing the added energy with that mellowness. The song creates so much space, swelling to embrace this feeling, passing 2mins on our way out of the first chorus. And I’m not mad! Perfect ooh’s over a fun groove. The second verse is a quick one, sticking to their mission, letting life move as it may and embracing each moment as it comes. Hope you caught your breath because it’s time to dance again. And again the urgency of ‘already know’ strikes a beautiful balance with the calm of ‘easy’. We break free with a stunning, shimmering, instrumental outro. Everything just feels so golden and green and lovely. I have a hard time not smiling throughout. Goldmyth’s second release this year is just terrific stuff, and I look forward to playing this over and over too.
In case you missed it - Okay Kaya going tf off with this Shania cover. Anjimile continuing their spectacular year. TATYANA with a Charli XCX but make it a downtempo haunting banger. Tank and the Bangas x Duckwrth is a smash, I’m dancing!! The MGK profile in Nylon is all it’s cracked up to be and then some.
All of these songs land in the MMM playlist! More tunes in the MMATOD playlist too! Also, I would be doubly thankful (maybe more, tbd) to you if you did want to share this with anyone else who’d be interested in the subby or playlist! Always looking for more friends :)
With love,
Max
