Happy Friday, happy music day.
So this is just how it’s always going to be huh? A waterfall of good music every week and I’m just standing underneath it with two cups trying to catch all the water. An impossible task but one I am truly delighted to try. This week is full of something for everyone, feeling grateful for all these gems.
Anyways, hope you all had a good week and are about to have a nice long weekend?? Feel free to throw these on at whatever party or bbq you go to. I’d especially rec the Faye Webster tune on endless repeat and just really get emotional with your friends.
What’s New This Week:
wahoo! that’s right it’s my other playlist!! my little baby, I love this one so much, it’s really good and I’m genuinely always listening to it myself. I cannot stop adding to this one, please enjoy today tomorrow and always!!
New additions to MMATOD:
Magic - Rico Nasty
Following Lil Nas X’s lead on this one. The opening riff is so delightful, putting a smile on face just knowing what’s coming. And what’s coming is Rico Nasty being good as hell. There’s a sprinkle of 00’s R&B in there too. It’s so catchy immediately, feeling entirely familiar and also brand new at the same time. The whistling flute there at the end is a perfect touch. Just a stellar song from top to bottom. Any Rico release is cause for celebration, and this time is no different. A beautiful summer party song.
Note To Self (feat. Empress Of) Rostam Remix - Jim-E Stack
Ok no one prepared me for this. And honestly that’s for the best, I would’ve been too excited. The original song is a huge one for me personally, been knocking around my running playlist for a year now and every time shuffle is kind enough to choose it, I’m smiling and dancing and singing. Just so fun. So on top of all that, you’re going to bless me with a Rostam Remix??? Folks! Just sitting there on my release radar, I was in shock. Rostam comes through, somehow still beating my expectations. Mellowing the songs harshest edges, and layering on some western flair. Very driving down the coast vibes and I am in heaven.
Chaeri - Magdalena Bay
Holy moly. This one is breathtaking. I think what makes it so powerful is how consuming it is. Creating and filling out an entire world of sound. It starts so big and dark and heavy, these vocals as gentle and soft as they could be. Calling it ethereal seems a little cliche as we hit this first chorus. It almost feels like it could soundtrack one of those fairy tales that as an adult you find out was actually an incredibly dark story. A kick and snare amp up the intensity after two minutes, the song building and building and building. And then voila. A massive and explosive moment just shy of three minutes. A stunning scene that left me breathless and left the song dancing. Dancing through the climax to a Jessie-Ware-worthy disco moment. But MB wasn’t done, a second wave of beautiful chaos crests us into the next song.
Sometimes - Faye Webster
A week later and I’m still sad I haven’t listened to this album more than I have (which is a lot). But this one has been an early fav. I’m getting the vibe that this is the album where I have a new favorite song every week, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, let’s just enjoy this beautiful and devastating song. “And then he left me / for someone who looks just like me” !!!!!!!!!! “What’s in Berlin (max note: brooklyn??) / what’s there that’s not here you need” !!!!!!!!! Go off Faye. I love these soft guitars, rolling into chords on both sides of the mix. The song has such a specific glow to it, a slow disco ball catching that golden hour sun as it slowly unwinds. The piano, the little xylophone, a jazzy moment!! Such a touching song, haven’t stopped running it back. Tune in next week to see which other song off the album I’m obsessed with.
Take Yourself Home - Troye Sivan
A major thank you to my sister for reminding me how good this song is. Is it a perfect pop song?? I have no notes… Every moment elevates above the last, but it’s not just adding more or getting louder, it’s full of thoughtful choices and perfect layers, adding and removing the right amount of everything at every point. And then just as it settles into a new groove the breakdown comes and I am left in awe and admiration. The moan dropped in at 3:55, injecting humanity into the outro and also blowing my mind with how well they pulled it all off.
ELEVEN songs that just dropped that I already know will be good but I haven’t listened to enough to actually write about. Give ‘em a try! I think you’ll like them.
The search for new songs never has to stop but these are my early favs that are living on the playlist now.
lavender just knows what I want to hear!! A totally singular sound and it’s so breezy and loving. Cosha released the album!! I couldn’t choose so I threw a few on the playlist. A bold and creative vision coming together in beautiful ways. Brent Faiyaz & Drake & the Neptunes? It’s a gem. The beat is obviously perfect, Brent is so smooth, and Drake funny as hell imo. PinkPantheress continuing their warp speed journey to superstardom, I love this one, it’s irresistible. Georgia Greene coming through with the production!!! I feel like I say this with all of her releases, but unbelievable voice, incredibly moving songwriting, but she makes both feel so approachable with every release. Richie Quake this one is a treat. Caught somewhere between outer space and the sun breaking the horizon as it rises. Jorja Smith on any song is a must listen, and more times than not, a must love. No difference here, SO strong. This Blood Orange remix is absolutely one of a kind. Gabriel Sayer with a charming indie song that comes to life in a Tyler, the Creator meets Ginger Root kind of way. A stunner. We stan TSHA on this substack. Anything she’s a part of is special and this one has me craving a festival field. Jack Grace released his album too!! Can’t wait to dig into this one more, but this song grabbed me on my first listen through.
What’d I miss?
See you Monday,
Max
