Max's Weekly Roundup vol. 1
Max's Music..... Fridays?! There's just too much music for one newsletter.
That’s right!! Another ~innovation~ from the fine folks (me) at Max’s Music Mondays Incorporated. Our team (yep, still me) has been hard at work (mostly just texting my sister) about groundbreaking, earthshaking, life-changing content (it’s this) that will take this newsletter to the next level (ok this part I am somewhat serious about actually).
And what we’ve got is our first ever Max’s Weekly Roundup (name still TBD, suggestions welcome as always). The old ICYMI section was too fun and too good, so I bumped it up to the top of the newsletter. But I’ve still got more stuff to say about these songs!! So here we go, I’m saying the more stuff. Right here, right now. Some quick hits to start the weekend right, enjoy.
What’s New This Week:
New additions to MMATOD:
this is my other playlist, and is genuinely what i listen too all the other days. here’s what i added this week!!!!
Down The Line Kimbra Remix - Remi Wolf
For fans of: Screaming your own ad libs while you dance in your room/car, nostalgia and love for the future at the same time
When I open my favorite website, Instagram.com, and see Remi Wolf posted another twisted animation my heart starts to flutter. Kimbra (!!!!!!!) absolutely destroyed this one. They took Down The Line, an often overlooked Remi gem, and swapped its flowery feel for a bone crushing edge that just GOES. This is a song that’s going to be played in a DJ set in like 15 years and people are going to lose their dang minds.
Barbara Ann - Rosie Tucker
FFO: Tender Rock n Roll, creative melodies, poetic lyrics, baseball bat brand loyalty
Every single time there’s a new Rosie Tucker song, I sprint to smash play. Such a brilliant songwriter, I can’t wait to see what devastating lyrics we’ve been blessed with (Well it bleeds like steak but it isn’t steak / I’m dying for a taste of the genuine fake / There ain’t nothing you can’t shape / From corn and soybeans). The vocals rule, and the band is rocking out. A beautiful writeup over on Far Out says it all much better than I can.
MMMOOOAAAAYAYA - illuminati hotties
FFO: Weird and funny but also piercing rock songs, singalong choruses, unexpected key changes,
HAHAHA talk about rocking out, this one a certified and undeniable ripr. It feels jagged and harsh and uncomfortable, and then the chorus is beautiful as all hell. It’s like Sarah Squirm meets Caroline Rose??? The call and response has me losing my mind. What I would give to be in a crowd yelling “If you’re not laughing, baby, then you’re not making money!”…. *tearing up emoji*
UNO BUONA STORIA - Bautista
FFO: Italian Reggaeton(??), duolingo, dancing on a moonlit beachside dance floor
Was deep in a rabbit hole at work this week, digging and digging for some Italian artists, and stumbled my way into this one. It’s so infectious and dark and hot, and maybe I’m going to learn Italian now?? The chorus seems to translate to “I bought you a helmet to take with me / To a My Chemical Romance concert” and if that’s not love I don’t know what is.
Spring Time - Mini Trees
FFO: Songs that get better with every second, breezy (but kinda sad) indie rock
A drum machine from the heavens to start, I love it, and only gets more beautiful from here. I’d recommend this one if you’re a fan of ______ (literally fill it in with anyone you like, you’re gonna dig this I swear). Just a beautiful song top to bottom, Mini Trees I am grateful. This one really blossoms like spring!!
Gone - Jorja Smith
FFO: vocals that make you wish you could sing better, dark R&B story songs
What could I possibly say. Jorja is incredible and strong as ever here. Production feels dark and spacious, sneaking in those subtle DnB fills, while Smith’s vocals expand as big and grand as the song allows. Finding beauty in the solemness.
Five more songs that just dropped that I bet will be good but I haven’t listened to enough to actually write about.
In case you missed it:
Anything I missed this week?? Send it over. Comment below. Frisbee the CD through my window. Whatever works for you.
Cheers, have a great weekend, see you on Monday with the typical two incredible, sensational, unbearably good songs. yeah yeah yeah…
yours,
Max
The day Max exposed me to Remi’s music, my life became significantly better. So, I guess what I’m saying is, MMM changes peoples lives? Yeah. That’s what I’m saying.
