Medium Build - Cutting Thru The Country
Another perfect song, he's unstoppable
I almost squeezed this one into last month’s recap on speculation. Knowing damn well it’d be all I listen to for weeks to come. And folks, looks like I’m a psychic. This one is doing NUMBERS (in my house at least).
It starts easy enough, a glimpse into a road trip, or maybe just a period of time, Medium Build trying to return to a person, to a moment, and coming up short.
Under these heavy chords, some atmosphere swells, another digital noise like a synth of a seal barking swings back and forth. It’s a new feeling within an MB tune, like he’s standing there with his guitar all these sounds swirling around him. But it still feels human and honest and real, even with these “not real” sounds.
The songwriting is dazzling, the title appearing all over the place, sometimes to start a moment, other times to end it. Its shiftiness defying any pattern, and I find myself getting lost in the song. It’s all starting to blur together, but not in a “oh this song is just the same thing over and over” way, no not at all, more a “I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this song, but I can’t stop now” way.
And per usual it’s full of Medium Build’s charm and heartbreak.
Every day’s a movie, and I’ve already seen…
Nothing is forever and I don’t even know / that’s just how it goes
His heart beating through the bridgey section, building and building, his signature belting coursing through the country and through my veins.
The latest off his April 5th album, and folks, we’ll never be the same once that drops…
