So excited for this new era of Rae Khalil. The first single back is a home run. An artist who I’ve loved for urgent jazzy hip hop, lyrics flying out at 100mph, is back with the smoothest, sultriest, r&b cut.
Showing off those vocals, at 0:40 - the run on time is CRAZY. The song has a crazy bounce to it, just a pleasure to rock with. No one said it would be easy but my god this song sure is.
You can still hear Rae’s tone cutting through here too, a unique touch on a line here and there that make it clear who is singing. Past 1:45 we return to a moment more familiar, Khalil rapping and it’s sounding so breezy.
I’ve been putting me first, oh yeah / you might’ve seen her by now
Beyond the 2:30 mark the band picks it up, the drums hitting a little harder - a sparse grove that is SO impactful. It perks the rest of the band up too, a little orchestral moment rising out of the chorus. Riding the beauty all the way home. A smash!
