WILLOW - b i g f e e l i n g s
another experimental, impossible to pin down new-jazz smash
WILLOW is on fire. We have to be honest.
In March, she released ‘symptom of life’ a jazz meets paramore banger that I continue to get sucked into. Challenging, mathy rhythms delivered with WILLOW’s beautiful and ever-changing vocals. So much emotion weaving angst into elegance, a great performance in so many different genres all at once.
The new single, b i g f e e l i n g s (which is so crazy to type) is a punk showtune in the best musical I’ll always want to see. It’s dramatic and expansive, even with the personal and earnest lyrics. Beyond the minute mark we float into a dream sequence, acceptance offering serenity, the band crashing back to remind us we aren’t there quite yet.
The piano break, these jazzy chords matched step by step with WILLOW, it’s so sick and almost unbelievable that it’s coming from a young indie/genre-blurrer and not a career jazz vocalist. CRAZY runs shown off right after. A fleeting moment before she’s back delivering these deadly alt rock vocals. This one is full of twists and turns and surprises and it’s exciting as hell.
